How draft fantasy football works
If you have ever followed an IPL auction, you already understand the part that matters: every player belongs to one team only. A draft is that idea without the bidding — managers simply take turns picking, and once a player is taken, they are gone.
One player, one manager
Most fantasy games hand every manager the same budget and the same player pool, so by mid-season half the league owns the same handful of stars and the scores barely differ. Draft fantasy removes the overlap entirely. Fifteen players each, no two squads alike, and every gameweek is your players against everyone else's — not your template against theirs.
That one rule changes how the game feels. Picks become real decisions with real trade-offs, a rival taking the striker you wanted actually costs you something, and finding a gem in the late rounds is yours to brag about all season.
The snake draft, in four steps
- 1A draft order is set. Every manager in the league gets a slot, usually at random. With eight managers, picks 1 through 8 make up round one.
- 2Picks snake back and forth. Round two runs in reverse: whoever picked last in round one picks first in round two. Nobody is stuck always choosing after everyone else.
- 3Taken means taken. Each pick removes that player from the pool for everyone else. The whole game is reading what your rivals need and taking value before they do.
- 4Rosters fill, the season starts. After fifteen rounds or so every squad is full, and from then on your players score for you alone — with waivers and trades to fix what the draft got wrong.
How scoring works
Points come from what your players do in real Premier League matches — goals, assists, clean sheets, saves — scored every gameweek, all season. Field your best eleven from your fifteen, and the manager with the most points (or the head-to-head win, depending on your league) takes the week.
Where Draftline fits
Your league itself lives wherever it lives — FPL Draft or Sleeper. Draftline is the board you draft off: a live, ranked sheet that re-ranks after every pick, flags injuries and fixture trouble, and explains why each player sits where he does. One manager can use it without asking the league to move anywhere.
The fastest way to understand any of this is to draft once. Open a practice draft — no signup, and about ten minutes from first pick to a full squad.
Play a whole season off one draft
Draftline runs its own free season competition, the Gameweek Ladder: draft a Premier League squad, enter it, and real matches score it every gameweek on a public table. Your best eleven is picked for you automatically after the matches, so there are no lineups to set and no deadlines to miss — drafting is the only skill. It is played in short phases a few gameweeks long, so whenever you find this page, a fresh ladder is never far away.
Common questions
- Is Draftline free?
- Yes — completely. There are no entry fees, no deposits, no cash games and no paid tier. You can run a full practice draft without even creating an account.
- Do I need a league before I can try it?
- No. Open a practice draft and the board plays the other managers for you, so you can learn the format on your own in about ten minutes. When you do have a league, Draftline sits beside it.
- How is this different from the fantasy apps I know?
- Budget-style fantasy lets every manager pick the same stars, so most teams end up nearly identical. In a draft, every player belongs to exactly one manager — like an IPL auction squad — so every team in the league is genuinely different.
- Has the Premier League season already started — is it too late?
- No. Draft leagues can start at any gameweek: everyone drafts from the same pool on the same day, so nobody starts behind. Any weekend of the season is a fine first draft.
